A repeat client from here in Gainesville recently visited Sound Depot and Performance to inquire about upgrading his SeaArk stereo system. This is the second marine audio system we’ve installed for this client, and we were happy to see him back. After looking over the boat and inspecting the existing audio system, we came up with a plan to bring this sound system to life. The client liked the plan and dropped off the boat so we could begin the installation.
JL Audio Marine Speaker Upgrade
The existing Sea Ark stereo system included a pair of 6.5-inch speakers mounted under the forward fishing platform and a JBL PRV-175 gauge-style radio mounted at the helm. Overall, the system simply didn’t play loudly enough to be audible when the engine was running.
We removed the 6.5-inch speakers and enlarged the mounting locations to house a set of JL Audio M880-CCX-SG-TB coaxial speakers. These 8.8-inch speakers offer impressive efficiency and great bass performance, thanks to their large size. The black and titanium sport grilles look great against the gray carpet on the hull of the boat.
High-Power Amp for Better Sound
To give the new speakers the power they need to sound really great, we installed a JL Audio M400/4 amplifier under the control console. The amp is configured to operate in two-channel mode to provide each speaker with an impressive 200 watts of power. The high-efficiency NexD design of the amp allows the client to enjoy his music while adding minimal load to the electrical system.
The amp is wired to the JBL radio using JL Audio marine-grade audio interconnect cables. We use 4-AWG battery and ground wire from Pacer Group to ensure reliable power delivery to the amp. Pacer Group cabling was used for the speakers as well. Even with the amplifier mounted up high and out of the way, the extreme heat and humidity associated with the marine environment can wreak havoc with conventional wiring and cause performance and reliability issues.
One-Day SeaArk Stereo Upgrade
After all the equipment was mounted and wired, we set the amplifier to optimize the performance of the system for the new speakers and the JBL source unit. This is an important step in ensuring the system will sound great and play loud without distorting.
The client returned to Sound Depot and Performance in Gainesville to check out his new SeaArk stereo system. He was thoroughly impressed with the improvement the new speakers and amplifier made to the system.
