A client from Melbourne contacted the team at Sound Depot and Performance about designing and installing a custom subwoofer system in his 2019 Kia Stinger. We went back and forth with the client to determine his expectations for the upgrade. After several conversations, we proposed a system that would provide not only the low-frequency performance the client wanted but also a level of cosmetic integration that was worthy of the vehicle.
Kia Stinger Subwoofer System
After taking several measurements of the available cargo area, we confirmed that our plan to use a pair of JL Audio 8W7AE subwoofers would work perfectly. Our fabrication team set to work creating a vehicle-specific enclosure for the pair of high-excursion 8-inch subwoofers. The vented enclosure design increases overall efficiency and low-frequency output. With more than 1.5 inches of linear excursion capability, we knew these speakers would be loud enough for the client.
The enclosure is trimmed in four vinyl-wrapped trim panels that cover the top, sides and rear face of the cabinet. The area around the slot-style vents is radiused to help provide a smooth transition and reduce the chance of turbulence and unwanted noise. We added red accents around the subwoofers to pick up on the subtle red accents around the vehicle. The rear of the enclosure is designed so that we can add a trim panel around the amplifier at a later date.
Factory Audio System Integration
The signal for the JL Audio 1000/1v2 subwoofer amp was extracted from the factory amplifier using an AudioControl LC2i 2-channel line output converter. The LC2i takes a speaker-level signal from the factory-installed amplifier and converts to a preamp level voltage that can be fed directly to the amplifier. We added an ACR-1 remote control to the LC2i and mounted the adjustment knob in the fuse panel cover on the lower portion of the dash. The client can use this control to adjust the output of the subwoofer system so that it blends to suit the music he has chosen.
The JL Audio 1000/1v2 amplifier provides up to 500 watts of power to each of the subwoofers to ensure that the system will play loudly enough. We used MESA 4-AWG power cabling and interconnects to feed power and audio signals to the amplifier.
Florida’s Car Audio Upgrade Experts
After configuring the amplifier to ensure that the output of the subwoofer would blend nicely with the rest of the system, we let the client know his Thunder Gray Kia Stinger was ready to be picked up. He was thrilled with the upgrades we had performed! If you want better sound from your car stereo, drop by Sound Depot and Performance in Gainesville or click here to send us an e-mail.
