A customer from Gainesville, Florida, came to Sound Depot and Performance with his 2015 BMW X3, looking to upgrade the sound quality of his car stereo system. We went out to the vehicle together to listen to it. What we both experienced was an anemic, almost lifeless sound. We listened as he told us where he wanted improvements, and then we went back in the store and gave him a tour. It was then that we suggested window film and paint protection, and he liked the idea. He made an appointment, and it was off to the races.
Audison BitOne Processor Forms Basis For This BMW X3 Audio Upgrade
We opted to keep the factory stereo in the dash and do our upgrades by using a processor, amplifiers and speakers. The brain of the upgrade is the Audison BitOne processor. It takes the musical signal from the stock radio and gives us dedicated crossovers, equalization and digital delay for every set of speakers. A properly tuned processor makes an incredible difference in the sound quality of the system. The music now travels to two Audison amplifiers in a custom mount underneath the trunk floor.
Audison Voce Amplifier Powers Gladen And Morel Front Speakers
An Audison Voce Quattro supplies several hundred watts of clean power to the new Gladen 8” woofers underneath the front seats and the Morel Hybrid402 component set in the front doors. We made custom mounts for all of the speakers to allow them to fit behind the factory BMW grills. We also installed sound-damping material to eliminate any possibility of rattles or resonances.
Audison SR Amplifier Powers Rear Speakers And JL Audio 10W3 Subwoofer
The custom fabricated subwoofer enclosure takes up minimal room, but provides ample bass to fill the entire SUV.
An Audison SR5 amplifier powers the two sets of factory rear speakers and the JL Audio 10W3 subwoofer. Sound Depot and Performance custom-made a fiberglass enclosure to hold the subwoofer in the rear passenger side panel and covered it in a matching vinyl. One of our highly skilled technicians then tuned the system to bring out every last nuance in the music. It now achieves concert-level volume with studio-grade sound. One listen to this BMW, and you would never want to leave.

Since a BMW is called “the Ultimate Driving Machine,” it really needed a custom-installed radar detector and laser shifter to top it all off. We suggested this to the customer, and he readily agreed. We installed the Escort 9500ci system, with front radar, front laser shifting and the optional rear laser shifters. We mounted the display up near the rearview mirror so he could easily monitor any alerts, and positioned the controller near the radio controls.
The customer was thrilled with the outcome of this build. Everything looked clean and precise, and worked just as we promised.
