A client brought his 2016 Jeep Wrangler to Sound Depot and Performance in search of a radio with some modern technology. The client owned an iPhone and knew that there were aftermarket source units with Apple CarPlay. He also wanted to add a backup camera to make reversing safer and easier. We showed him several source unit options and then created a quote to install and configure everything in his Jeep. With his approval, we scheduled an appointment to install everything.
Jeep Wrangler Backup Camera
Jeep mounts a full-size spare tire on the rear door of the vehicle. The spare tire blocks much of the view out the rear window and makes parking precarious. The backup camera makes reversing much safer.
To start the project, we removed the spare tire from the rear door of the Jeep. We mounted a custom camera bracket from Automotive Installation Solutions on the spare tire mount. Once that was in place, we installed the AIS BUCAMB to the bracket and routed the wiring through the vehicle and toward the dash. We always secure any new wiring to factory harnesses when possible, to keep it safe and protected.
Jeep Wrangler Radio

Apple CarPlay allows the client to use many of his smartphone apps via voice control.
We removed the factory radio from the Jeep and wired up an adapter harness for a Kenwood DDX-9903S. The Kenwood DDX-9903S is a double-DIN multimedia receiver with CarPlay. Apple CarPlay allows the client to make and receive phone calls, send and listen to text messages, and plan navigation routing by pressing a button and talking to the radio. The client can even choose music from his phone or Apple Music.
The Kenwood DDX-9903S features a bright and clear 6.95-inch LCD screen; built-in HD radio; Bluetooth hands-free and audio streaming; and support for MP3, WMA and FLAC audio files.
We connected the backup camera to the radio and interfaced it with the vehicle so the camera image will appear as soon as the gear selector is in reverse.
Accessible USB Connection

This Jeep has modern technology and is safer now, thanks to the pros at SDP.
Since the client will need to connect his iPhone to the radio to use CarPlay, we installed a PAC USB-DMA Dash Mount Adapter at the base of the center console. This location replaces one of the cigarette lighter-style power ports but adds a great deal of convenience.
The client picked up his Jeep from Sound Depot and Performance and was very happy with his backup camera and CarPlay-equipped radio. We reviewed how to use the radio with the client and connected his phone to show him how easy it is to use CarPlay.
