A client from here in Gainesville brought this awesome 1983 Mastercraft Ski boat to Sound Depot and Performance for an audio system upgrade. He wanted better speakers, Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to crank the system up good and loud. We looked over the boat and came up with a solution that would give him what he wanted without compromising the styling of this classic machine. He loved our plan, so we scheduled an appointment.
Mastercraft Audio System Source Unit

The Memphis radio gives the client many audio sources in a small package.
We started with the installation of a Memphis MXA1MC source unit. This unit fits into the same opening as a 3-inch gauge, such as a speedometer or tachometer. The MXA1MC includes Bluetooth audio streaming, a multi-region AM/FM receiver, a USB port for a thumb drive/memory stick and a rear auxiliary input as source options. We had the choice of using the built-in amplifier or the pair of preamp outputs to connect a high-power amp. We, of course, chose the latter.
High Power Amplifier and Premium Speakers
To power the audio system, we chose the JL Audio M700/5 amplifier. The M700/5 is a five-channel amp that can produce as much as 75 watts into the four main channels and 300 watts to the subwoofer channel. A dedicated mounting panel for the amplifier is in the forward storage compartment. As always, we secured all the wiring to the panel to prevent damage from vibration.
Our technician connected the front channels of the amp to four JL Audio M770-CCX-CG-WH 7.7-inch marine coaxial speakers. The massive 7.7-inch diameter of these speakers provides excellent efficiency and great sound quality. Since JL Audio is one of the premiere marine speaker manufacturers in the world, we know these speakers will sound great for years and years. We created custom mounting panels for the speakers out of waterproof Starboard.
Subwoofer Solution
The client wanted good, solid bass from his system. We installed a pair of JL Audio 10W1-4 subwoofers into an Atrend subwoofer enclosure. The Atrend SPL-10DV is a vented enclosure that offers each sub 1.35 cubic feet of airspace to produce fantastic low-frequency output. It may not seem as if 300 watts is a lot of power, but when you combine efficient subwoofers with this amazing enclosure, let us assure you, the results are impressive.
Mastercraft Audio System Delivery
The client returned to Sound Depot and Performance to pick up his boat. We paired his smartphone to the radio so he could have a listen. He was stunned at how great it sounded. We had reviewed the remaining functions of the head unit before he left.
