A client from Gainesville recently dropped by Sound Depot and Performance to inquire about a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Apple CarPlay upgrade. He knew all about how CarPlay worked with his iPhone to make communication and entertainment safer while driving. After talking to the client about the audio system in Jeep, it became apparent that an audio upgrade was in order to make it truly enjoyable. We put together a neat little package with all the bells and whistles to give the client want he wanted.
Pioneer CarPlay Upgrade
We showed the client the Pioneer AVH-1330NEX multimedia receiver. This radio includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Should he change phone brands in the future, he will have similar connectivity and safety features. The radio includes a 6.2-inch touchscreen, has a built-in HD radio receiver, and includes dedicated interfaces for Pandora and Spotify.
We installed the radio in the dash of the Jeep and wired up a steering wheel control interface. The steering wheel control interface allows the driver to control the new radio using the volume, source and tracking buttons built into the steering wheel.
Audio System Upgrade
During our conversation with the client, it became apparent that he wanted more bass in the Jeep. A lack of deep bass is common with most factory-installed audio systems. We showed him the JL Audio SB-J-JK2DR/10W1v3/BK Stealthbox solution for 2007 and newer two-door Jeep Wranglers. This vehicle-specific enclosure fits into the bottom of the cargo area and includes a single 10-inch 10W1v3-2 subwoofer. The BK designation at the end of the part number refers to the black carpet used to finish the enclosure. Once installed, the enclosure truly looks like it is meant to be in the vehicle.
To power the Stealthbox, we installed a JL Audio MX500/1 amplifier under the passenger seat of the Jeep. This compact amplifier is rated to produce 500 watts of power into a 2 ohm load. This is more than enough power to ensure the sub can keep up with even the most dynamic music passages.
Jeep Wrangler Apple CarPlay Upgrade Project
After a few hours of work, we had the system installed and tuned. The client hopped into the Jeep Wrangler for a listen and was immediately impressed with how much better everything sounded. The crossovers built into the radio let the factory speakers handle midrange and high frequencies and provide complete control over the subwoofer level so the client can fine-tune the bass to his tastes.
