We performed this relatively straightforward speaker upgrade for a Gainesville local who was referred to us by a friend. He brought us his 2003 SeaRay 182 bow-rider boat, needing to replace its weather-worn and dry-rotted speakers.
The Clarion CD deck was still in viable shape, so we retained the original unit. We replaced the speakers in the back with JL Audio 6.5″ marine coaxials – more or less as a direct replacement for the factory equipment, just with a bit more oomph.
Upfront, where the riders mostly sit, we decided to go a bit bigger. In the bow footwell, we upgraded the speakers to the JL Audio 7.7″ coaxials. Up near the top of the bow, we also installed new 1″ JL Audio tweeters for increased clarity, and to add height and width to the sound.
The result was a fantastic upgrade to the original marine stereo. Replacing the degraded speakers with new ones added a bigger presence and volume to the system.
