A repeat client from here in Gainesville recently brought his 2013 Chevrolet Corvette to Sound Depot and Performance to discuss how we could upgrade the stereo system. He wanted to modernize the technology in the vehicle and improve the sound. After a quick inspection, we showed the client several source unit, speaker, amplifier and subwoofer options. We helped him create a solution that would sound great and work with his budget.
Kenwood Radio with Backup Camera
The Kenwood radio gives the client all the newest technology in his dash.
The client wanted a new radio with modern smartphone integration. He chose a Kenwood DMX706 because it had both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so he’d always be connected, no matter what phone he purchased in the future. The radio features a large 6.95-inch touchscreen that makes it easy to see and use. We integrated the new radio into the dash of the Corvette and added an Echomaster backup camera to the rear of the vehicle. The camera image is displayed on the touchscreen to show everything behind the car when the driver starts backing up.
Chevy Corvette Speaker and Subwoofer Upgrade
Next on the agenda was a speaker upgrade. To stay within his budget while getting great sound, the client chose a set of Sony XS-GS1621C 6.5-inch component speakers. We used a set of Metra mounting adapters to place the woofers in the factory door locations. The tweeters are mounted at the top of the doors behind the mesh grilles. A set of Kenwood 5.25-inch KFC-X133 speakers in the rear factory speaker locations wraps the sound around the listening position.
An important part of getting great sound in a car audio system is the addition of a subwoofer. In keeping with the cost-effective design of this system, we mounted a JL Audio CP108LG-W3v3 subwoofer enclosure in the cargo area. This enclosure features a high-quality, 8-inch subwoofer in a vented enclosure that offers great efficiency and low-frequency extension.
The sound system is powered by a Sony XM-GS4 four-channel amplifier. The amp is mounted beside the subwoofer, with the dark tint on the rear window concealing all the equipment from view and keeping it safe. This amp drives all of the speakers in the car. The front channels drive the front and rear speakers with about 40 watts each, and the subwoofer receives 160 watts from the rear channels.

After the audio system was dialed in and tested, we let the client know he could pick up his Corvette. He was thrilled with the sound and mentioned that it dramatically exceeded his expectations.
