A client from Live Oak, Florida, came to Sound Depot and Performance after hearing about the amazing marine entertainment systems we build. He wanted to upgrade the audio system in his 2016 NauticStar 203 DC Sport Deck boat. We had a look at the boat and discussed where and how the client would be using the new system, then designed a system for the boat. With the client’s approval of the design, we booked a time to start this NauticStar audio system upgrade.
Power Begets Power
To reinforce the power delivery capabilities of the boat, we added a large marine battery from Interstate. This battery extends playtime for the two JL Audio amplifiers.
To power the audio system, we selected a JL Audio M1000/1 amp for the subwoofers and an M800/8 eight-channel amplifier for the midrange speakers. We mounted the amplifiers and the associated power, signal and speaker wiring to a starboard panel in the main storage locker.
JL Audio M-Series Speakers
During the interview process, it became clear that the client was interested in a system that could get good and loud. To meet that goal, we installed four pairs of JL Audio marine speakers.
There is a cooler at the front of the bow seating area. We removed the factory speakers above the cooler and enlarged the openings to house a pair of JL Audio M880-CCX-SG-W 8.8-inch coaxial speakers. To add to the system, we mounted a set of M770-CCX-SG-W 7.7-inch coaxial speakers in between the 8.8s.
To round out the sound delivery in the boat, we installed two sets of JL Audio M650-CCX-SG-W speakers. One set replaces the factory speakers, and the other is on either side of the center walkthrough to the bow seating.
Marine Audio Needs Bass

The subwoofer enclosure tucked neatly into the storage area.
The client wanted the new system to have good, solid bass. To meet this goal, we created a marine-grade subwoofer enclosure and finished it with black carpet. We installed a pair of JL Audio 10tw1 subwoofers in the enclosure. The subwoofers point down at the floor to provide better acoustic coupling.
Window Tint
The client asked if we could tint the windshield of the boat while we had it in our shop. We obliged by installing 3M FXP tint in a 15% grade to add some style to the boat.
NauticStar Audio System Delivery
The client was stunned at how great the new system sounds. Music is crystal-clear at all volume levels and the bass is solid.
