Here at Sound Depot and Performance, we are always ready to share the latest in audio technology with our clients. The state of the art in high-end audio is now centered on digital signal processors that can work magic on a system. The JL Audio TwK 88 is the latest component for those who want to “tweak” every last nuance in their music.
Digital Signal Processing
If you are not familiar with a DSP unit, it may look like a strange “black box” at first sight. There isn’t much to look at except for eight channels of inputs and outputs, as well as two digital inputs and one output. The magic occurs when you load the JL Audio Twk-TuN app into your computer. Running the signal through your laptop or desktop offers you a ton of adjustments in the digital realm that would require a huge processor with lots of knobs to replicate in an analog world.
Basic, Advanced And Expert Modes
This unit will do a lot of the work for you. It has three levels of set-up programmed into it. You can choose a simple Basic software guided set-up that can be done in as little as 10 minutes, and will handle basic crossovers, a 10-band EQ and no time delay. The Advanced mode will take closer to an hour and add options for the crossovers, more parametric EQ controls and time delays. The Expert level gives you control of all of the crossover options, parametric EQ and time delay features, as well as a diagnostic mode.
Stand-Alone Or Part Of A Modular Signal Processing Package
It is worth mentioning that this is strictly a DSP unit. It will work great with most aftermarket head units; even better if you get one with digital outputs. If you are planning on adding this to a factory deck, especially one with separate amps and component speakers, the FiX 82 that we reviewed in April would be a great match for the TwK 88. It gives you the ability to sum together, and correct, the signal coming into the DSP. See the previous article HERE.
