A client from here in Gainesville recently visited Sound Depot and Performance to upgrade his 2012 Ford F-250 audio system. The client wanted something that would make his hard metal music sound great and, of course, play loud! We had a look at the truck and then designed a system that would replace all the factory audio equipment with premium products to deliver the performance he wanted.
Step 1 – Kenwood Source Unit Upgrade

The new radio offers loads of features and sources.
We removed the factory CD player and installed a Kenwood eXcelon DDX9903S multimedia receiver with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. We integrated the radio with the factory steering wheel audio control switches to make using it easy. We added a SiriusXM SXV300V1 receiver so the client could listen to whatever genre of music he wants, anytime.
Step 2 – More Power with AudioControl Amplifiers
An AudioControl four-channel amp D4.800 drives the midrange drivers and tweeters in the front of the truck with up to 125 watts each. The D4.800 includes a six-channel digital signal processor that provides crossovers, signal delay and equalization settings for each speaker in the system. The amp includes a processed output to feed a subwoofer amp. To power the sub, we installed an AudioControl LC1.800 monoblock amp under the driver’s seat. We added an ACR-3 remote control so that the client could adjust the system from the front seat.
Step 3 – Hertz Front Speaker Upgrade
We installed a set of Hertz MPK1650.3 Pro components in the front the truck. The tweeters are mounted in the factory A-pillars to create a stable soundstage across the dash. We prepared the doors by applying sound deadening to the inner and outer skins of the front doors. Our fabrication team made a set of HDPE plastic mounting adapters for the woofers. Once secured to the vehicle, we installed a set of Stinger Roadkill Fast Rings acoustic baffles.
Step 4 – Custom JL Audio Subwoofer

The subwoofer enclosure fit under part of the rear seat.
Our fabrication team constructed a custom enclosure for a JL Audio 13TW5v2-2 subwoofer under the driver’s side rear seat. The client uses a wheelchair, so he needed the space on the passenger side of the truck. We finished the enclosure in grey carpet that matches the interior nicely.
Step 5 – Ford F-250 Audio System Tuning
The final step was to configure the DSP in the amplifier to create a realistic and stable soundstage and, of course, natural frequency response. The client loves the way his new Ford F-250 audio system looks and sounds. It gets good and loud while sounding crystal clear!
