A repeat client from here in Gainesville recently contacted the team at Sound Depot and Performance to inquire about adding a custom subwoofer system and radar detector to his 2015 BMW 428i Gran Coupe. Having worked with the client previously, we had an idea of how he likes to enjoy his music and knew that he wanted something that looked and sounded great. While talking with the client, we confirmed his expectations for radar detection so we could suggest an ideal solution.
Custom BMW Subwoofer Enclosure
Our plan for the BMW 428i was to create a custom enclosure that fit neatly at the rear of the cargo area and serve as a home for a pair of JL Audio 10TW3 10-inch subwoofers. The core of the enclosure is constructed from MDF that was cut to fit the space between the rear strut towers and angled to match the rear seat back.
In keeping with the elegant theme of the design, our technicians integrated a diamond pattern into the face of the enclosure around the subwoofers. This panel was finished in dark gray vinyl that matches the interior of the vehicle.
A secondary trim panel at the bottom of the enclosure serves as a protective grille to prevent cargo in the trunk from coming into contact with the woofers. This panel was wrapped in a gray carpet. Finally, a trim piece of the top of the enclosure adds the final bit of custom flair to the design.
AudioControl Subwoofer Amplifier
The additional rear trim panel helps conceal the wiring.
The subwoofers are powered by a single AudioControl LC-1.800 800-watt monoblock subwoofer amplifier. The amp is mounted to the rear of the enclosure and a vinyl-wrapped trim panel finishes off the area behind the seat for a neat and tidy look. We added an AudioControl ACR-1 remote level control to the amp so that the client can fine-tune the subwoofer output to suit the music he is listening to.
Escort Radar Detector
The Blendmount system securely holds the new radar detector.
We suggested the Escort Redline EX as a solution for the client’s radar detector needs. This portable detector features dual antennae for excellent front and rear sensitivity. The system features Escort’s IVT filter to prevent false alarms from radar-based cruise control and blind spot monitoring systems.
We attached the detector to the rearview mirror using a vehicle-specific mounting bracket from BlendMount.

With the BMW subwoofer system installed and configured and the wiring for the radar detector concealed, it was time for the client to return to Sound Depot and Performance in Gainesville. He loved the look of the installation and was thrilled with its performance.
