Why Is A Signal Processor Important and How Do I Get One?

Signal ProcessorHaving Sound Depot and Performance in Gainesville add a digital signal processor to your audio system is easily one of the best sound quality upgrades available. Years ago, signal processors were synonymous with creating artificial-sound echoes and reverberations. Modern processors are precision tools that a trained technician can use to improve the accuracy and realism of your listening experience.

Music in the Mobile Environment

The sound you hear from your audio system is determined by two factors: your speakers and your environment. Acoustic reflections from the large glass surfaces in your vehicle can cause peaks and dips in the frequency response of your music. The equalizer function built into a modern processor can compensate for these frequency response anomalies.

Using a processor to tame acoustic issues in a vehicle will yield a bigger perceived improvement in system performance and accuracy than a speaker, amplifier or source unit upgrade, assuming you already have competent equipment.

Speaker Location Compensation

Unless we are building custom kick panels or dash pods, most automotive speaker upgrades end up being mounted in less-than-ideal factory speaker locations. The signal delay capabilities of a modern digital signal processor can be used to align the output of all the speakers in your system so that you hear them all at once. This “time alignment” has the effect of creating a virtual soundstage across the dash of your vehicle. Your music will sound as though you are sitting in the recording studio as your favorite band mixes its final take.

Accurate System Configuration

The processors we offer include very accurate electronic crossovers that make it easy for us to configure your systems for efficient and reliable performance. Rather than turning dials on an amp, we can target a crossover point value to ensure that each speaker will operate within the exact frequency range for which it is designed. Many processors also include the ability to undo system tuning features that are built into factory source units and amplifiers.

Digital Signal Processor Options

Signal ProcessorWe have two solutions to add a processor to your vehicle. If you already have an upgraded audio system with an amplifier, we can easily add a stand-alone processor like the JL Audio TwK-88, AudioControl DM-608 or DM-810, or one of the Audison bit solutions. These units will install between your source unit and amplifier to allow us to fine-tune the signal going to each amplifier channel.

If you are ready for a complete overhaul of your audio system, we carry several amplifiers with built-in processors. The new JL Audio VXi series is one of the most extensive offerings in the industry. AudioControl offers four- and six-channel amps with DSP. Using an amp with integrated processing saves time during the installation process and reduces the accessories required to complete the installation.

Whether you want to upgrade your existing system or build something from scratch, the mobile electronics experts at Sound Depot and Performance in Gainesville have the tools, training and experience required to create an amazing listening experience in your car, truck, SUV or boat.
