A client from Gainesville came to Sound Depot and Performance for a 1965 Volkswagen Notchback audio system upgrade for his classic ride. We went out and looked over the car, and talked with the client to understand how he liked to listen to his music. Once we had a grasp of the goals for the system, we had a listen to different products in the store and came up with a plan.
We started by installing a Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X500 radio under the dash of the car. We used a combination of different mounting kits to give the radio a clean and purposeful look. We also mounted a JL Audio XD700/5 amplifier under the rear seat.
The front and rear channels of the amp each powers a set of Hertz HCX165.4 coaxial speakers. We mounted the front speakers down in the kick panel location for excellent staging. We constructed a vented subwoofer enclosure to house a pair of JL Audio 8W1v3-4 subwoofers. We sealed off the trunk to focus all the bass energy into the vehicle.
The client loves the way the system sounds, and we enjoyed working on this rare classic.
