One of the most popular upgrades we do here at Sound Depot and Performance is the addition of a subwoofer system. Adding a subwoofer, even a small one, will have a dramatic effect on the overall performance of any audio system. Let’s look at a few reasons why.
A Speaker Right For The Job
Bass adds depth, warmth and emotion to your music. However, the little door and rear deck speakers that come with your car cannot move far enough to make the audio system produce good, solid bass. In addition, most factory audio systems do not have enough power to drive a speaker to make good bass. Adding a dedicated subwoofer system to your car, even a small one, gives us a way to reproduce clean, clear bass.
What’s That Noise?
If you were to analyze the noise that drowns out your music while you drive, you’d see that much of what is lost is bass. Noise from your exhaust, noise from your tires and even a component of wind noise all drown out what little bass a factory audio system can produce. Adding a subwoofer lets us increase the amount of bass in your system to drown out these competing noises.
All Around Better
When we add a subwoofer system to your stereo (amplifier, subwoofer and subwoofer enclosure), all the work in making bass in your car is dedicated to the sub. Your small factory speakers and the radio no longer have to work as hard. This means that they will sound better, play louder (within their frequency ranges) and even can last longer.
Big Bass Does Not Have To Be Big
Historically, adding a subwoofer meant a large enclosure was required, and it needed a physically large amplifier to power it. Today, companies like JL Audio, Hertz, Audison and Memphis all manufacture subwoofers that can fit into minuscule enclosures and still play well below 30 Hz. We can create an enclosure that fits into the corner of your trunk or hatch. Shallow design subwoofers allow us to build subwoofer enclosures that fit behind or under the seats of pickup trucks. If you want something more creative, we can finish the enclosure in vinyl instead of carpet. We can create custom grilles, add Plexiglass accents and include LED illumination. The only limit is your imagination.
Thanks to efficient amplifier designs, we can often hide a high-power amplifier under a seat or in a storage compartment in your vehicle. Some subwoofer amplifiers are so small, we could install several of them in your glovebox at once! (Not practical, but you get the idea.)
There’s another benefit to such an upgrade: Modern amplifiers draw less current from your vehicle electrical system, and let you play your system louder and listen to it for longer periods of time.
