A longtime client of Sound Depot and Performance in Gainesville recently contacted us to inquire about installing a radio, amplifier and speakers in a pair of custom 2019 airboats that he and his brother recently purchased. We’ve done at least four or five of these installations for each of these brothers over the years, and we know exactly what it takes to deliver the audio performance they want out on the water.
Airboat Marine Radio and Amplifier
The project started with the installation of a Rockford Fosgate PMX-3 digital media receiver on the back of the console between the front seats. This compact all-in-one radio features a 2.7-inch color display, built-in Bluetooth with A2DP audio streaming and a USB port to play music from a memory stick or smartphone. If the client desires, we can add a SiriusXM satellite radio tuner to the Rockford radio at a later date.
The client can play music stored on his smartphone or stream audio from a service like Pandora, iHeartRadio or Tidal to entertain himself and his guests on the boat.
The output of the radio feeds to a four-channel Rockford Fosgate Power Series TM400X4ad amplifier that our team mounted on a weather-resistant King StarBoard panel in the storage compartment under the rear seats. The amplifier is wired to deliver an impressive 200 watts of power to the system’s speakers. We used marine-grade power and speaker wire to ensure that the system will perform reliably. As you can see, all of the wiring is bundled securely to keep all the connections tight and so that nothing will buzz or rattle as the boat races across the water.
JL Audio Marine Speakers
The amplifier feeds a pair of the new JL Audio M6-Series M6-880X-S-GmTi 8.8-inch coaxial speakers. These massive speakers are mounted on either side of the storage compartment. With their massive woofer cone and 1.25-inch silk dome tweeter, these speakers deliver amazing bass and high-frequency performance without the need for a dedicated subwoofer.
Alachua County’s Marine Audio Experts
With the installation complete, we called the client to let him know he could pick up his boat. When he arrived at Sound Depot and Performance, he climbed on board for a listen. As usual, he was thrilled with the sound and loved our neat and tidy installation.
