One of our local Gainesville, Florida, clients brought his 2016 Ram Laramie Longhorn to Sound Depot and Performance to add a subwoofer system to its factory audio system. He didn’t mind how the radio worked and felt the front speakers did an adequate job, but it needed some real bass to bring it all together. We showed the client several options before settling on a package that would meet his needs.
We based the system on a JL Audio 10W3v3-2 10-inch subwoofer and a Kenwood X501-1 amplifier. The Kenwood amp can produce up to 500 watts of power into the 2 ohm load that the JL subwoofer provides.
We mounted the sub in an enclosure from Atrend. The vented design of the cabinet dramatically increases its output and efficiency.
We interfaced the Kenwood amp with the factory audio system, using an AudioControl LC2i. The Accubass feature of the LC2i interface helps to restore any lost low-frequency information caused by the factory source unit.
The client loves the way the system sounds. It plays much louder and sounds better now that the factory speakers aren’t trying to make bass.
