An Orlando client recently read an article about the lack of sound quality in Honda vehicles and was referred to us at Sound Depot and Performance for an upgrade to his 2016 Accord. Our sales and installation professionals consulted with the client, and we came up with a plan to get the sound quality up to the client’s expectations. The factory source unit was adequate for the system, and we went to work from there.
Audio Control Processor, Heart Of The System
The first piece to make everything work was the Audio Control DQ-61. This is the heart of the system. It took the factory signal that was optimized for the low-quality Honda factory speakers and upgraded the signal for use with high-quality amps and speakers. We were able to equalize the outputs, enhance the bass and adjust a time delay for the best soundstage for the vehicle. We mounted the bass knob for the Audio Control processor conveniently in front of the gear shifter for easy access.
Audison Power
We simplified the system by using a single Audison AV5.1k five-channel amplifier that was capable of running the entire system with one compact package. The amp is rated at 75×2, 140×2 and 600×1 at a 4 ohm load – plenty of power for the system we designed. High-quality Memphis 4 gauge power wire and high-quality interconnects supplied adequate current.
Hertz Speakers Front And Rear
The client wanted the speakers to be loud and clear, so we went with Hertz HSK 165 XL components upfront with the 6 1/2″ midbass in the factory door location and the tweeters mounted higher up to pull up the soundstage. We added rear fill with Hertz HCX 690s in the rear deck.
MESA Sound Deadening
The performance of both sets of speakers was greatly enhanced with generous amounts of MESA Matt sound-deadening material to eliminate vibration and help soundproof the vehicle, as well as Fast Rings to help direct the sound into the vehicle and not into the loose-fitting door panel where it could cause cancellation. Extra details like these added up in a big way to the overall performance of the system.
JL Audio Subwoofer Enclosure
A JL Audio HO110RG-W3V3 vented wedge box that fits neatly behind the rear seat provides the low frequency and a great location for mounting the Audison amplifier. It took up very little room, and left the client with plenty of trunk space.
Client Loved His Improved Honda Sound Quality
The system exceeded the client’s expectations, and we were glad to have another satisfied Sound Depot and Performance client.
