Recently, a long-time client from Gainesville came to Sound Depot and Performance with his newest audio project for us: a 1978 Lincoln Town Car. He was looking for a serious sound upgrade and knew we were the place to go. Our team looked over the vehicle with him, explored ideas and listened to equipment with him on our interactive displays. Once we figured out the best solution for him, we gave him a proposal that he liked, so we set a time to begin work on the vehicle.
Pioneer Radio Offers Cutting-Edge Technology
Since we have done business with this client for 17 years, we had a good idea of his likes and dislikes. We knew he wanted to upgrade the stereo system in the dash, since 1978, while a good year, was lacking in technology compared to what is available now. We installed a Pioneer AVH-4200NEX 7” touchscreen unit in the dash, instantly giving him cutting-edge technology, including Apple CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto. Whether he owns an iPhone or Android phone, he now has voice control over many of the functions on his smartphone, including phone calls, texting, GPS navigation, music and Internet radio apps. As you can see in the finished pictures, the stereo system looked factory-installed when we were finished.
Hertz Speakers All Around
Next, we turned our focus to upgrading the almost–40-year-old speakers in the vehicle. We chose two pairs of Hertz HCX165.4 6.5” coaxial speakers, with one set going in the front doors and a second set going in the rear deck. For some extra brilliance up front, we installed a set of Hertz HT28.4 tweeters in the factory speaker locations in the dash.
Magical Trunk Build
At this point, we turned our attention to the trunk, where a lot of magic happened. Our talented installers built a custom box to hold three JL Audio 12W6v3 12” subwoofers and covered it in a green vinyl that matched the vehicle’s exterior paint color.
JL Audio Power
When it came time for power, we went back to JL Audio, choosing two of their Slash Series amps: a 1200/1v3 to power the subs and a 300/4v3 to power the speakers. This combination gave the client well over 1,500 watts of clean power, so the party is on any time he cranks it up. We built a custom amp rack and trim panel to display the amplifiers right behind the enclosure, and we covered it in the same green vinyl as the box.
Sound-Deadening And Wiring
While the vehicle was disassembled, we installed MESA Mat sound-deadening material in all the doors and the trunk area to dramatically reduce road noise and vibrations. We also ran all new wiring in the vehicle for the sound system, to ensure reliability down the road.
Lincoln Town Car Audio Blows Client Away
Once the system was completely tuned, it was time to return it to our client. We were excited to see his first impression of our finished work. The instant we popped the trunk on his beautiful Lincoln, the smile on his face told the whole story; he was in love! To make things better, when we cranked it up for the first time, he knew lots of unexpected road trips were going to be in his future so he could listen to his new tunes.
