The owner of this amazing Peterbilt transport truck recently contacted the team at Sound Depot and Performance in Gainesville for help in creating an amazing show-quality sound system for the vehicle. We have worked with the client’s son on previous projects, so the son suggested that we could help his dad create something cool in his show truck.
Show Truck Audio System Design
The client owns a trucking company here in Florida, and this customized Peterbilt is his rig. Though the exterior of the truck has been modified to meet the client’s taste, the interior and entertainment system were lacking the same personal touch. The client met with our team and together we worked out a plan to add a high-power audio and video system to this Peterbilt. Read on to find out what we created.
Custom Peterbilt Audio System
The build started with our fabrication team creating a new overhead console in the front of the truck. The console is home to two sets of Kenwood KFC-X174 6.5-inch coaxial speakers and a Kenwood KDC-X502 single-DIN receiver. The speakers are located at the outer edges of the console to help with stereo separation, and our team integrated an angled mount for the radio that faces it toward the driver for improved ergonomics. A multi-component trim panel on the roof of the truck features a blend of white and black vinyl with two mirror inserts
The overhead work on the truck continued with custom mounting panels for two sets of Kenwood KFC-X694 6×9 speakers in each of the back corners of the sleeper. On the driver’s side of the truck, the trim panel fits over the rear access door to the sleeper and includes mounting locations for the climate controls and reading light. We mounted a 32-inch Samsung UN32N5300 flat panel TV on the passenger side of the truck. The TV is powered by an inverter and includes streaming solutions like Netflix and Hulu so the operator can relax after a long day’s drive or put on a popular program while the truck is on display at a local show. The back wall of the rig has a trim panel that uses the same basic concept as the roof panel to help complete the look of the interior.
The system amplifiers and subwoofer enclosure under the bed are the centerpiece of the system. Our fab team created an enclosure for a pair of 10-inch Memphis Car Audio M610D4 subwoofers and faced it with a fiberglass trim panel that surrounds the center vent, the subs and the Kenwood amps at either end of the system.
Kenwood Car Audio Amplifiers
The system is powered by a pair of Kenwood XR901-5 five-channel amplifiers. One amp powers the four speakers in the front and one of the subs while the other amp drives the four rear speakers and the second subwoofer. In all, the system has an impressive 1,680 watts of power on tap to suit whatever music the operator wants to enjoy.
System Tuning and Client Delivery
With more than 100 hours of custom work into the installation, on top of wiring and configuring the amplifiers and source unit, it took our team a little while to complete this unique project, but the results are more than worth the investment. The client was thrilled with the way everything looks, and he loves the clarity and detail of the system. Of course, being able to crank up the bass on his favorite song is the icing on the cake while he’s hauling a trailer down the interstate.
The client has plans to show the Peterbilt at several truck shows, including the 21st Annual Truck Show Extravaganza at 75 Chrome Shop in Ocala and a similar event in Clearwater. Whether the truck is on display or hauling cargo across the state, the client will enjoy the new audio system in his Peterbilt. This was a unique project for our fabrication team and one that we all enjoyed very much.
